Wk 1o- Artist Conversation- Helen Werner Cox

Artist: Helen Werner Cox

Exhibition: Silent Screams

Media: Woodcarving, Oil Paint, Pastel, Water Based Materials

Gallery: CSULB School of Art, Gatov Gallery West

Website: www.HelenWernerCox.com

Helen Werner Cox is currently a graduate student here in California State Long Beach and is in the Drawing and Painting Program. She was born in  Ithaca, New York and eventually moved to California for the weather. In California she worked as a high and middle school teacher and also a librarian. Her hobbies include gardening, reading and lately has been playing the DOTS game. Fiction and Mystery are her favorite genre of books.

Her gallery consist of horses, like the ones that you see in a carousel ride. She uses a wide variety of media to convey her horses like woodcarving, prints, and oil pastels. I like that her color scheme varies between each piece, some are monochromatic while others have bright and lively colors, similar to those of a carousel. Most of the horses had a terrified look on them. Her lines her subtle and it it adds a very “soft” feeling to the art, in contrast to the horse’s expressions.

Cox channels her emotions about society in her exhibit. She feels like we are going in circles and not progressing enough. While technology is advancing, our emotions aren’t. We keep repeating our mistakes so we are stuck in the same place. The horse’s expressions depict the chaos that humans are going through. She spent a long time studying carousels and even riding them which is what I think gives a realistic feeling to all of the art pieces.

I really love that meaning that Cox put in this. gallery. At first I thought she was one of those girls obsessed with horses in school but she used the horses to convey a very important message. It’s almost like a cry to society to change but no one can hear. I love her variety in the gallery and shows how skillful she is in each area.

Wk 1o- Art Experience- Instagram

For this week’s Art Experience we had to post 4 or more pictures onto Instagram! I like Instagram and I check it often even though I usually post something every couple of weeks. It has a very mellow and almost hipsterish vibe and I like how most of the pictures posted pay a lot of attention to aesthetics.

I posted things that would fit my Instagram aesthetic so I posted pictures of food I ate, pretty things I saw, and lastly a selfie. I wanted to delete them after this assignment was done but they fit my profile so well that I don’t want to anymore! They were all around 40 likes, and most of them were from mutual followers.  Being someone that posts every couple of weeks, I got a little anxious posting 4 times in the same day. I got new mutual followers that day and I didn’t want them to think that I post this often! Even posting twice in a day is pushing it a little bit. I’m not sure why posting more than one picture is such a taboo, it just is.

Wk 9 – Classmate Conversation – Katherine Shinno

For this week’s Classmate Conversation I talked to Katherine Shinno! We actually went to the same high school and a lot of mutual friends (we were even in the same prom group!) but never really got the chance to talk. Katherine is a first year Communications major at California State Long Beach and hopes to use her degree to work for Disney. She has one older sister that graduated from CSULB also! She was born and raised in Pasadena and  played tennis in high school. Her favorite Art Experience so far was the Cuisine, Couture, or Coiffure and she chose cuisine. She meal prepped food for her older sister and included a protein and a vegetable in each one. Her favorite food is Italian.

Cathy

Cathy was a fairy born in the year 1997 but due to a freak accident had been frozen until 2046. She was found in an iceberg and then was transported to Moonbase Alpha for further investigation. She was a bit confused during the process but got used to living on Moonbase Alpha after she was released.

Because of her special powers she usually goes around helping people. Her powers aren’t very strong so she can’t aid in major events like preventing a natural disaster or aliens. Her daily life consists of flying around Moonbase Alpha looking for various things to help out with like, getting a cat out of a tree, jump starting a vehicle, crossing the street with the elderly, just to name some.

Throughout her time on Moonbase Alpha she has met a countless amount of people with unique personalities. Here are some of the people that she’s met!

Alexa Luna– Alexa used to be co-workers with Cathy. The worked in the same organization that help families and orphan. However Cathy felt too constricted and left the team. But she and Alexa still keep in touch.

Frank Spacey– Cathy met Frank a little while back when She was given an award for her assistance with the creation of the first park on Moonbase Alpha. He’s a quite prestigious man so he rarely has any time to see old friends.

Rocko– Rocko had once asked Cathy to collaborate on a Youtube video about the park that she helped build.

Wk 8- Automatic Drawing

I went over to Daiso to buy the paper and I ended up getting a sketchbook to use for this week’s Art Experience

I had my friend Amy help with the Automatic Drawing. I wasn’t able to get a picture of us drawing because it was only the two of us.

At first we laughed and just drew circles but Amy had an idea to draw actual figures! At first she drew a cat then she drew me and in return I drew her. I used two different pen colors to add contrast but it’s a bit hard to tell from the picture. It was a bit hard holding onto the pen so sometimes the pen wouldn’t even make contact with the paper!

Wk 8- Artist Conversation-Bri Joy

Artist: Bri Joy
Exhibition: MERGE
Media: Screen Paint, BFK printmaking paper
Gallery: CSULB School of Art, Gatov Gallery East
Instagram: @brijoy

Bri Joy is currently an undergraduate at CSULB and is expected to graduate soon with a BFA in  Printmaking. She enjoys a lot of active hobbies like snowboarding, yoga, hiking, and surfing. She came from a small town in the mountains that had a population of less than 1000. So, moving here to Long Beach was a bit of a culture shock to her but she views it as a positive experience where she can see the different traits of both cities.

Joy’s works are hand printed on a large sheet of paper with special ink. Because of the art’s large scale, Joy has to break down each piece into separate sections for them to be completed individually and there is no room for error or else she has to start all over again. All of her works are in black and white and contain both linear and organic lines and shapes.

Like the title of the art gallery, “MERGE” Joy hopes to bring together contrasting ideas. Her art represents her past and present, her hometown in the mountains and new life in the city of Long Beach. She doesn’t want these ideas to be conveyed as separate things but more like ideas that can co-exist and blend together seamlessly.

I enjoyed looking through Joy’s exhibit. I’ve always like the concept of merging unlike things together, it shows that contrasting ideas can be together. I also found her art to be very interesting and captivating, although it does look simple with its black an white colors and lines, her pieces hold a deeper meaning.

Wk 8- Classmate Conversation

This week I got to know Tiffany Tran! She was actually the one to call out to me and then we realized that we met once before at a VSA meeting through a mutual friend. Her favorite types of music are R&B and Japanese. She went to Marina High School with the mutual friend and commutes. She wants to be a psychologist or a high school teacher in the future. Over Spring Break she’s going to travel to Canada and she wants to travel to Japan.

Wk 7- Classmate Conversation
